The EDUCHILD Story

EDUCHILD Foundation, Inc. is as a duly registered non-stock, non-profit organization having been incorporated with the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission on May 21,1979

The EDUCHILD story, however, actually began on February 14, 1976—some 6 years before—when a small group of individuals among whom were Francis and Tessie Arcenas, Jay and Gigi Calero, Mike and Maja Guerrero, Ronnie and Linda Tablante, Tonton and Vicky Torralba, Rory and I where invited by Bernie Villegas to attend a meeting at the Center for Research and Communications on Jorge Bocobo St. for a lecture by Fr. Joseph Duran.

We were ushered into the classroom at CRC and were given a small demonstration of the type of inter-action we would have with parents. The group was informed about family orientation programs being conducted in Spain and it was suggested that the same be started in the Philippines to provide the continuing parenting education for the parents of the PAREF schools that were being organized.

Subsequent meetings were held in Manila and Quezon City hotels and even an overnight outing of parents at the Batulao resort in Batangas, then owned by the Puyats. Among the other lecturers were Bernie Villegas, Esther Esteban, Dra. Tañega and Fr. Joseph de Torre.

From April 26 to 28, 1985 Rafael Pick introduced the parenting course to about 40 couples in Study Sessions held at the Center for Research and Communication’s Ortigas campus.

After this, the first training session covering the 10 cases of the Basic Course was began on May 11, 1985 with group meetings conducted by separate teams in private homes and general sessions held every Saturday thereafter at the JPM Foundation premises (made available by the Browns) on Pioneer St., in Mandaluyong. English translations of the Spanish cases materials from the Fomento organization in Spain were used. Among the first attendees were:

Arcenas, Francis and Tessie
Aquino, Tom and Marilene
Bautista, Rollie and Lisa
Brown, Walter and Annabelle
Berenguer-Testa, Juanjo and Miren
Casus, Jesus and Tita

The first EDUCHILD participant couples came mostly from parents of Woodrose and Southridge and their close friends. These sessions were occasions for marketing the PAREF schools to more parents especially the younger ones and were “billed” as the vehicle for the “continuing parenting education” for the parents of all the PAREF schools.

(The above is my best recollection as taken from some of the notes I was able to keep over the years.)
